Windhoek mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja on Wednesday launched a backyard gardening training initiative at Farm Okukuna in Goreangab Dam, aimed at strengthening food security among residents.

Fifty-five participants from the Katutura Central and Tobias Hainyeko constituencies are taking part in the first phase of the training. The programme is part of the broader Mayoral Backyard Gardening Project, which seeks to empower residents with the knowledge and skills to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

Participants will receive practical instruction and starter kits that include seeds, tools and composting materials. The initiative addresses challenges such as rising food prices and limited access to nutritious food, while promoting self-sufficiency and environmental sustainability.

A network pyramid model will be implemented, requiring each trainee to pass on their knowledge to at least five other community members, ensuring a wider reach and lasting impact.

The training is being offered by the City of Windhoek, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Land Reform, the Namibia Aspiring Farmers Association, and agriculture students from NUST currently serving as interns.

Furthermore, Larandja said the initiative demonstrates the City’s commitment to food security, environmental sustainability, and inclusive community development. - [email protected]
