Nature course for teen boys this coming holiday

Would you like your son to learn basic survival skills - like how to find or build a shelter, find food or how to get a fire going without matches or a lighter? Do you think it is necessary for child to be able to identify the indigenous trees, mammals, birds and snakes, and know what to do when they encounter these animals in the wild?
Then give your child (ren) the unique opportunity to participate in the second Intelligence Support Against Poaching (ISAP) Junior Ranger course from 19 to 26 June.
At the ISAP camp, which is located on a 10 000ha game farm northwest of Okahandja, the youngsters will attend both theoretical sessions and practical sessions in the bush. The children will learn to use their senses more acutely and will need to apply discipline.
Children, between the ages of 13 and 18, will have to do without their cellphones for just over a week, show their endurance during 2.4 km jogging sessions and learn to work as a team. They do not have to compete against the other children, only against themselves.
A basic first aid course during the week will not only give the participants a certificate, but give them an advantage over other children at the school and valuable knowledge for the rest of their lives.
Compass and map reading skills, radio communication, observation and silent communication also form part of the programme. The course is an adventure, a challenge, brings knowledge and is important for conservation in Namibia.
The children will sleep in tents, and ISAP staff and instructors and a qualified paramedic will be present at all times.
“The most important thing I learned was respect and following instructions - even when you do not feel like it. With respect, I mean listening to each other, obeying the rules and following instructions,” said one of the participants in the first ISAP Junior Ranger course.
Another former course participant added: “The most important thing I learned was good communication, not only with people but also communicating with animals!”
Participation costs N$5 890 per student, which works out to N$736.25 per day, all meals, accommodation and activities included.
