VTCs cool down

The Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade (MIT), through the National Ozone Unit (NOU) with support from GIZ Proklima, donated 16 Green Air Conditioners (ACs) valued at N$216 775 to the Windhoek Vocational Training Centre.
This initiative aims to promote the sustainable use of green energy-efficient appliances, aligning with the sector's shift away from greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to mitigate pollution.
The donation seeks to capacitate technicians by providing training in the safe handling of these devices, focusing on energy efficiency standards, safety standards, energy and safety testing requirements, and good practices in installation and maintenance within the refrigeration and air conditioners (RAC) sector.
Green ACs, in contrast to conventional ones, have no ozone-depleting potential (ODP) or global warming potential (GWP). They reduce energy consumption by up to 5 000 kWh over their lifetime, leading to significant cost reductions for consumers and the government. The introduction of Green ACs is poised to revolutionize the air conditioning industry.
Dr Michael Humavindu, Deputy Executive Director for Industrial Development, highlighted the ministry's collaboration with customs officials to ensure the importation of the right refrigeration and air conditioners. The MIT, in conjunction with the VTC, offers support to value chains endorsing the appropriate RACs.
The Green ACs are part of equipment previously donated by GIZ to the MIT in December 2023, marking a long-standing cooperation between the parties in implementing technical projects for ozone protection under the Montreal Protocol since 1998. The transition from CFCs and the current exit from HCFCs are accompanied by the HCFC Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP) and funding windows under the Montreal Protocol, reflecting strong collaboration with the Ministry. With the 2016 Kigali Amendment broadening the focus from ozone to climate protection, GIZ supports Namibia in the phase-down of HFCs through the Cooling Program for Southern Africa (CooPSA).
Polli Andima, Centre Manager of WVTC, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying that technicians and trainees would receive proper training on installation, maintenance, and responsible use of the ACs.
The 16 units will be distributed and installed at vocational training centres in Valombola, Gobabis, Arandis, and Windhoek, further enhancing the green energy initiative.
