Allgemeine Zeitung turns 109 – A legacy of news and community
Next year marks a huge milestone for the Allgemeine Zeitung – the paper will be 110 years old! But even in its 109th year, there’s plenty to celebrate. The AZ is not only Namibia’s oldest newspaper, but also the only German-language daily outside of Europe. Over the decades, it’s grown into a pillar of the local media landscape – adapting, evolving, and informing readers through changing times and tough transitions.
That journey hasn’t always been easy. Back in July 1915, after the surrender of the German Schutztruppe in Khorab, the German-speaking community in Namibia lost political power. Meanwhile, in Europe, Germany was still reeling from its role in two world wars. Despite this, the AZ remained a steady voice, serving its community and staying relevant through massive historical shifts.
In 1949, the paper witnessed the start of apartheid after South Africa’s National Party took power. At the time, South West Africa was seen as a colony of South Africa, and when the country broke away from the UK in 1961, it faced major political consequences – changes that were felt here too.
Then came another turning point: Namibia’s independence on 21 March 1990. The Allgemeine Zeitung was there to document this defining moment and has continued to be a voice for the German-speaking community, playing a role in the country’s growth and development ever since.
In more recent years, the newspaper has embraced the digital age – a shift that picked up speed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, in the age of artificial intelligence, a small but passionate team keeps the AZ alive and thriving every single day.
The very first issue hit the press on 22 July 1916. Today, the 132nd issue of its 109th year has just been published. And the reach is bigger than ever – over 450 000 people connect with the AZ each month.
This success wouldn’t be possible without loyal readers and supporters. The editorial team extends heartfelt thanks to every individual, organisation and friend of the Allgemeine Zeitung who has stood by the paper over the past 109 years.
Here’s to the next chapter – and to keeping the fire burning bright as we approach 110!
