Thirty years of Big Walking!

With mild temperatures and even a few raindrops, the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule Windhoek (DHPS) celebrated the 30th anniversary of its traditional Big Walk last Saturday, an event that focused not only on physical activity, but above all on the strong school community.
Early that morning, almost 500 learners from grades 1 to 6 gathered with their parents, families, friends, teachers, alumni and school supporters to hike together through the picturesque landscape of Farm Aris. A lively and cheerful spirit prevailed right from the start.
A special highlight was the performance by the ÖK Beans, whose energetic live music brought great entertainment to the festival grounds and gave the anniversary event a very special flair.
The smooth running of the day was made possible by impressive teamwork: the organising team, many committed helpers, the DHPS caretakers and janitorial staff, parents, teachers and other supporters worked side by side to make the day unforgettable. Their dedication and enthusiasm showed in every detail, from the excellent catering to the lovingly decorated stands along the hiking trail, the festive anniversary party hats, and much more.
“The Big Walk is more than just an event, it reflects the strength and spirit of our community, which is characterised by togetherness, joy, and a love of nature,” said Valerie van Zyl, Head of the DHPS Primary Section. “Together, we are not only walking the route, but also shaping the future of our school. It was a great day! We look forward to the next 30 years.”
DHPS Principal Jörg Przybilla also shared his excitement: “I thoroughly enjoyed this Big Walk. Now in my second year, I can truly appreciate how well this day was organised, thanks to the strong teamwork of committed parents, the administration team and Ms van Zyl. Thank you for a wonderful event.”
This year’s Big Walk not only marked a major anniversary but once again showed the liveliness and strength of the DHPS community. The anticipation for the next 30 years is already in the air!
