After two years with no Windhoek Carnival (WIKA) due to the corona pandemic, the carnival season in the capital finally started this week under the motto “He who laughs, lives”.
At the masked ball at the SKW earlier this week, jesters united to celebrate the first evening of this year's season with a colourful and varied program.
After the Elferrat (council of 11 – a mythical number in carnival lore) marched in and, as is traditional, taken their seats on stage, WIKA president Natascha Helm opened the masked ball and with it this year’s festivities.
Also present were the royal couple, Prince Gunnar, the number guru and Princess Kim the spontaneous one and who have ruled the roost for the last two years, along with their royal guard.
In addition to singing performances with the band, outstanding dance performances were presented. Along with the the carnival guard and two Funkenmariechen, the dancers from the Anchen Wille Dance Academy also performed an oriental dance.
The young men of the WiKa also did not miss the opportunity to deliver a dance performance.
Three Büttenredner (speakers) presented entertaining speeches with some “helpful advice”.
The highlight of the masked ball was provided by the Drag Queens group with various dance and “lip syncing” performances.
The festivities continue at the SKW until Sunday, with the exception of the parade, taking place in Independence Avenue on Saturday from 11:11.
