Discover Namibia’s railway heritage at the TransNamib museum
For over a century, the rhythm of the rails has been the heartbeat of Namibia’s development. These tracks have carried more than just freight and passengers; they have carried the hopes, stories, and history of a nation. At TransNamib, we believe this legacy is a treasure meant to be shared, not just preserved.
That is why we invite you, your family, and your community to step into the TransNamib Railway Museum. More than a collection of artefacts, it is a living gateway to the past—a place where the incredible journey of Namibia’s railway network comes alive.
Experience History First-Hand
Imagine coming face-to-face with a photograph over a century old, or seeing the very tools and instruments that built the iron road connecting our communities. Our museum offers a unique, tangible link to the pioneers of Namibian industry.
Are you a student eager to bring your history or engineering lessons to life? A researcher seeking untold stories? Or simply a curious mind wanting to understand the foundations of modern Namibia? The museum is your destination.
Meet the Keeper of Our Stories
At the heart of this experience is our passionate Curator, Mr Dixon Kahiika. With more than two decades of dedicated service at TransNamib, Mr Kahiika said he does not just curate objects; he curates stories. His deep knowledge and professional yet warmly sociable manner transform a visit into a captivating conversation. Let him guide you through the archives and share the human stories behind the steel and steam.
Join the Celebration: Namibia Heritage Week
We are proud to be an active member of the Museums Association of Namibia, contributing to the national effort to safeguard our shared cultural identity. This commitment was powerfully demonstrated in September 2023, when TransNamib marked the Museum's 30th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, we paid a special tribute to the late Walter Rusch, a respected Co-founder of the Museum and co-author of the seminal work, Hundred Years of Railways in Namibia. Honouring his legacy reinforced our dedication to the pioneers who documented and preserved our history for future generations.
Every September, TransNamib builds on this spirit by staging a variety of engaging events to celebrate Namibia Heritage Week. From special exhibitions and storytelling sessions featuring retired railway employees to interactive tours for school groups, it is a time when the museum truly buzzes with the energy of living history.
