The Debmarine Namibia Premiership on Saturday saw several teams gain momentum with important wins.
Many of the contenders began the weekend hoping to continue with their winning form, while others were hoping to improve on their performances.
After Saturday’s results, Mighty Gunners were still leading at the top (27 points), but with Eeshoke Chula Chula (27 points) only placed second due to a one-goal inferior goal difference.
African Stars’ were third on Saturday in their chase for a third title in a row (26 points) while Unam (23), FC Ongos (21), KK Palace (21) and perhaps even Eleven Arrows (20) are still within striking distance after 14 matches for each team.
The fact that several teams in the league were separated by small margins of just one log point saw some movement on the log table before Sunday’s results were known.
Ongos FC were 3-0 winners over Life Fighters FC as the league resumed.
Ongos came into the weekend lingering in the middle of the table, while Life Fighters continue to battle in the relegation zone.
A brace from Dwayne Kinda and another goal from Punje Katjimune was enough to earn Ongos the victory at Unam Stadium.
Ongos FC coach Ronnie Kanalelo expressed satisfaction with the victory. The coach however pointed out the need to continue improving as the season progresses.
“It was a good game from the boys and I am happy that we managed to get the job done.
“The win came via a combination of good possession play and tactical discipline.
“This was a good performance but we need to continue doing well,” Kanalelo said.
In another influential fixture on the premier league calendar, African Stars FC defeated rivals Young African 3-1 at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium.
The champions came into the weekend holding second place and desperate to keep track of log leaders Mighty Gunners.
Edmar Kamatuka, Aminu Mohammed and Lawrence Doeseb scored the goals for the defending champions.
Mighty Gunners on the other hand also maintained their good start to the season on Saturday.
The men in uniform from Otjiwarongo came into their match against Unam FC as favourites and log leaders.
Gunners made no mistake and managed to beat the University side 1-2 at the Unam Stadium.
Bernard Horaseb and Ronaldo Kauvi scored the goals for the team from the central north.
Eeshoke Chula Chula also made their presence felt on Saturday with an away win at Rundu.
Chula Chula managed to beat Julinho Athletics 3-2 in a statement victory.
KK Palace, also previously a log leader this season, and Rundu Chiefs played to a 1-1 stalemate.
Friday result
Khomas Nampol FC on Friday beat struggling Tigers FC 2-0.
The Police team started the season struggling compared to their last season’s form, when they finished third.
It was however an evening to redeem themselves under the Independence Stadium floodlights.
Ronaldo Vries and Eubraim Apollus scored the goals for Nampol.
Coach Fortune Eichab lauded his men for an important victory.
“We desperately needed that win in order to get the confidence back.
“I think the players just have to carry on doing what the coaches instruct and we will be back to where we belong.
“There are more premier league matches to come and we will continue pushing hard for a good season,” Eichab said.
