Access roads, rainwater drainage systems, and water supply facilities for the Windhoek District Hospital are set to be completed this month, with the external power supply expected by 10 April. This was confirmed by Walters Kamaya, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, on behalf of the Directorate of Health Technology and Infrastructure Management.
According to Kamaya, the contract for the access road, rainwater drainage system, and water supply infrastructure was awarded to a successful bidder, with construction work beginning in May 2025. “The work is currently at an advanced stage. The original completion date was 22 December 2025. However, due to the addition of a special water supply line, the completion date has been postponed to January 2026,” Kamaya said.
Meanwhile, the contract for the external power supply was awarded in July 2025. After earlier delays, construction work is now progressing steadily. “There were some delays with this contract, but the work is back on schedule. Completion is expected as originally planned on 10 April 2026,” Kamaya added.
These construction activities form part of the first phase of the hospital, which is being built in the Havana constituency and will provide 500 beds. Phase I focuses on development and general infrastructure, including access roads, water, sewage, stormwater management, and power supply - all of which must be in place before construction of the hospital buildings can begin. The government has allocated more than N$42 million for this phase. The total cost of the Windhoek District Hospital has since been revised to N$3.2 billion.
Once completed, the new district hospital will ease pressure on Katutura Intermediate and Windhoek Central hospitals, which currently serve a growing population of nearly half a million people in the Khomas region.
