Windhoek's ‘grande dame’
For residents and visitors to Windhoek, it is a landmark that is part of the capital’s skyline. This stylish and majestic building with a view that stretches to the horizon and was once the home of a millionaire, has been attracting guests as a boutique hotel for more than two decades, who return time and again to its grace and hospitality.
According to Nordic legend, Thule refers to a place where reality and imagination meet, very fitting for Hotel Thule, which turns a quarter of a century old this year.
However, the beginnings of the buildings that house the boutique hotel date back to 1960 when construction magnate and property developer Edmund Lafrenz built this luxurious home for himself and his wife, Liselotte.
In 2000, it got a new owner, Wolfgang Egerer who, like Lafrenz, was a property developer and in the construction industry. His idea was to convert the property into luxury apartments, but after consulting with architect Piet Odendaal of Büro Odendaal Architekte, he decided to convert it into a boutique hotel instead.
Over the next 25 years, it grew into a four-star home for guests and visitors with 25 rooms, a boardroom, a restaurant and of course a veranda with an unforgettable view of the capital.
And as befits a “grande dame”, still with her sophisticated finishing touches reminiscent of her beginnings.
