Goreangab Mall starts taking shape

N$270 million investment set to transform community access
Oryx Properties Limited and Safland Property Group last week hosted an exclusive media walkthrough of the Goreangab Mall development, showcasing major progress on one of Namibia’s most ambitious retail projects. The mall is designed to bring quality shopping closer to communities that have long been underserved.
The N$270 million development, scheduled to open in May 2026, marks a bold partnership between Oryx Properties and Safland Property Group. More than 82% of the retail space has already been secured, with Shoprite confirmed as the anchor tenant.
“The Goreangab Mall is a symbol of what’s possible when the private sector comes together to invest meaningfully in communities that have long been underserved,” said Ben Jooste, CEO of Oryx Properties. “This mall represents a commitment to economic empowerment, community upliftment and inclusive growth.”
The project is set to create 700 jobs in total; 340 during construction and 360 permanent positions once operational.
Main contractor Andeo Construction, which took over the site on 3 February 2025, has completed 95% of the concrete work, pouring almost 7 600 cubic metres and installing 490 tonnes of reinforced steel. Around 250 000 labour hours have been logged so far. Despite an exceptionally wet rainy season that brought nearly 400 mm of rainfall in March during major excavation, the project is only seven to eight working days behind schedule.
Kallie van der Merwe of Safland Property Group underlined the development’s impact: “A shopping centre is the heartbeat of a community. Here at Goreangab, more than 300 permanent jobs mean 300 people no longer need to travel into town. That’s 300 commuter trips saved every single day.”
The mall will carry Edge green certification and feature an innovative integrated public transport hub, with taxis entering directly beneath the mall to connect passengers seamlessly to the shops above. Covering 14 700 m² of top-floor retail space and approximately 10 000 m² of basement parking and taxi ranks, the development forms the anchor of the wider Goreangab Waterfront Development, which also includes 2 500 residential units currently under construction.
Shoprite Regional Manager Collin Christof confirmed the retailer’s role as anchor tenant, saying the partnership offers an opportunity to serve Namibians “where it matters most - in their communities.”
