Mayor calls for more consideration on Windhoek's roads
Windhoek mayor Ndeshihafela Larandja has urged the city’s motorists to show greater consideration for pedestrians and cyclists. The goal, she said, must be the equal coexistence of all road users. “As stakeholders, we need to come together to raise awareness and encourage a behavioural shift among motorists towards pedestrians. This is essential in making our roads safer and supporting our broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions,” said Larandja.
The mayor made these remarks during the handover of 150 cycling safety kits at the Katutura Care Centre. The beneficiaries were selected through constituency representatives and the organisation Physically Active Youth (PAY).
In his address, Ruben Uupindi of the MVA Fund pointed out that 32 per cent of road fatalities in Namibia involve pedestrians. He also stressed that wearing cycling safety gear can not only prevent serious injuries but also ensures compliance with legal requirements.
The event marked the official closing of “Zero Emission Week”, held from 15 to 21 September. The focus was on raising awareness about carbon emissions and promoting sustainable modes of transport such as walking, cycling, and public transportation.
