G45 BMW X3 crowned 2025 SA Car of the Year

Following two days of rigorous testing, the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ) has crowned the BMW X3 as the 2025 South African Car of the Year (COTY).
This marks back-to-back wins for BMW, which took the 2024 title with the 7 Series G70.
Produced at BMW’s Rosslyn plant near Tshwane, the X3’s win underscores the strength of local manufacturing. Judges praised the SUV’s refinement, innovative design, advanced digital features and overall value for money. It’s also the first time the X3 nameplate has taken the top honour.
BMW extends its record for the most COTY titles since first winning in 1988 with the 735i. The X3 also topped the Premium category.
The Suzuki Swift secured a strong second place overall and won the Budget category. Now in its fourth generation, the Swift impressed with its safety features, including six airbags as standard.
Rounding out the top three was the G90 BMW M5, winning in the Performance category and taking the special Jurors’ Choice Award. The hybrid M5 impressed with its blend of powerful twin-turbo V8 performance and zero-emission capability.
