13% of Rehoboth standpipes non-operational
The Rehoboth Town Council has reported that 39 of the 45 water standpipes identified within its jurisdiction are operational, while six remain out of service. The figures were presented to the council as part of feedback on information requested by councillors and the community regarding the number and operational status of water standpipes in Rehoboth.
According to the report, the 39 operational standpipes account for 87% of the total, while the remaining six are non-operational. Burgershoek has 13 standpipes, of which 12 are operational and one is not working. In Volstruis Vlakte, all seven of the identified standpipes are operational, while the one standpipe in Industrial Stores is also working. De Duine has the largest number of standpipes, with 15 identified. Of these, 12 are operational and three are not working.
All four standpipes in Block H are operational, while the single standpipe in the Shack Dwellers area is also working.
Blikkies Dorp has four standpipes, of which two are operational and two are not. The report noted that while the overall operational rate of 87% was positive, particular attention should be given to De Duine and Blikkies Dorp.
The two areas account for five of the six non-operational standpipes identified across Rehoboth. The council was informed that procurement of the required items is in progress, after which repairs to the non-operational standpipes should be prioritised.
The report also identified a need to strengthen the monitoring of water tokens. The council's assessment provides a breakdown of the operational status of standpipes across the town, with the six non-operational units remaining the immediate infrastructure issue identified in the report. The council said the required items were being procured to facilitate repairs, while monitoring of water tokens was also highlighted as an area requiring attention.
