1864 homes completed
The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development facilitated the completion of about 1,864 houses across Namibia during the 2025-2026 financial year, as Government stepped up efforts to improve access to affordable housing.
Minister of Urban and Rural Development Sankwasa James Sankwasa provided the figure during a performance review with Prime Minister Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare in Windhoek on Wednesday.
The ministry also reported the construction of 250 sanitation facilities in rural areas during the period, targeting improved living conditions and access to basic services. Sankwasa said the ministry had also injected N$146 million into the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia during the financial year to address the housing needs of low-income earners.
The funding forms part of efforts to accelerate the delivery of decent and affordable housing, particularly for low-income and vulnerable communities. According to Sankwasa, the ministry’s broader programme remains focused on land delivery, housing, sanitation, decentralisation and local economic development. He said these interventions were aimed at addressing infrastructure gaps and improving the quality of life of communities in both urban and rural areas. Ngurare said housing remained one of the key priorities of the 8th Administration and stressed the need to ensure that low-income households had access to decent, safe and affordable housing.
The Prime Minister said Government would continue prioritising initiatives that respond to the housing needs of ordinary Namibians, while strengthening collaboration between Government, communities and other stakeholders to accelerate housing delivery across the country.
