City of Windhoek expands cashless bus service through PayPulse partnership
The City of Windhoek is taking further steps to modernise its public transport system through a partnership with Standard Bank's PayPulse platform, aimed at making bus travel more convenient, accessible and efficient for commuters. On Wednesday, the City's Department of Urban and Transport Planning, together with Standard Bank (PayPulse), hosted an information-sharing session for internal stakeholders who engage directly with members of the public using municipal transport services.
The session formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen awareness and understanding of the cashless payment system that was fully implemented across the municipal bus network in August 2025. Since the introduction of the system, all municipal bus passengers have been required to use smart cards to pay for their journeys, replacing traditional cash payments.
The latest enhancement to the service is the introduction of the PayPulse platform, which allows commuters to register, manage and top up their travel accounts with greater ease. Through the platform, users can conveniently recharge their accounts remotely or visit designated Woermann Brock supermarkets to add funds to their cards. City officials say the system has been designed with inclusivity in mind, ensuring that both smartphone and non-smartphone users can access and manage their transport funds safely and efficiently.
The initiative forms part of the municipality's broader vision of improving service delivery through digital innovation while ensuring that public transport remains accessible to all residents. To support the rollout, an ongoing public awareness campaign will be launched to educate commuters on how to register for and use the platform. The campaign is expected to provide practical guidance and help residents become familiar with the system's features and benefits.
City officials believe the enhanced payment solution will not only improve the overall commuter experience but also contribute to a more efficient and reliable public transport service for the capital. As Windhoek continues to embrace digital transformation, the partnership with PayPulse represents another step towards building a smarter, more responsive urban transport network that meets the needs of a growing city.
