City secures N$1.2 million training grant for Firefighting and rescue programmes
The City of Windhoek is set to benefit from N$1.2 million in training funding from the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) to support accredited firefighting and rescue operations programmes offered through the City's Emergency Management Training Centre (EMTC). The Municipal Council of Windhoek approved the City entering into a Training Grant Agreement with the NTA for the implementation of the National Vocational Qualification in Firefighting and Rescue Operations Levels 1 and 2. The funding will cover approved training- related costs for 40 trainees enrolled in the two programmes. The grant will run from 1 April 2026 to 30 June 2027, in accordance with the terms and conditions of the agreement. The EMTC obtained accreditation from the NTA in 2024 as a vocational training provider for Firefighting and Rescue Operations Levels 1 to 4. The accreditation positioned the Centre as a
recognised provider of vocational education and training in the emergency management sector.
The grant is expected to enable the EMTC to expand its training capacity while reducing the financial burden on trainees. The agreement also strengthens the City's capacity to develop skilled personnel in firefighting, rescue operations and emergency management. The agreement is aligned with the City's strategic priorities relating to human capital development, service excellence, emergency preparedness and institutional sustainability, and supports the City's broader objective of building a skilled and responsive workforce. The NTA funding will be adjusted quarterly based on the number of trainees. Additionally, the agreement stipulates that trainee covered by the grant will not incur any extra fees for the training services provided under this agreement.
