City to remove illegal electrical wiring
The City of Windhoek has announced a city-wide campaign to remove illegal and unauthorised electrical wiring, with the exercise set to begin in September 2026. In a public notice issued on 29 June 2026, the municipality called on all residents to remove any illegal electrical connections from the date of the notice, warning that enforcement action will commence in areas where unlawful connections are most prevalent.
The initial focus areas include Otjomuise, Okuryangava, Havana, Hakahana and Goreangab.
According to the City, the campaign follows a rise in illegal and unsafe electrical connections in several informal settlements, posing serious threats to both life and property. The municipality said illegal connections are not only unlawful but also extremely dangerous, as they are often installed by unqualified individuals or residents without the necessary knowledge of electrical safety.
The City revealed that, over the past five years, more than eight people have died, while numerous others have been injured due to electrocution and fires linked to illegal electrical installations. In terms of the Electricity Act, 2009, and the City of Windhoek Supply Regulations, the redistribution or secondary supply of electricity without prior authorisation from the municipality is strictly prohibited. Residents found with illegal electrical connections will face penalties, immediate disconnection of their electricity supply, and will be required to settle any outstanding amounts before services can be restored.
The removal exercise forms part of the City's Electricity Safety Campaign, launched in 2020, which aims to protect lives and promote safe, legal access to electricity. The City has encouraged residents requiring further information to contact its Electricity Department.
