Explosive devices detonated

The Namibian police's explosives unit detonated a total of fifty-five 40 mm rifle grenades of South African origin along the Kupferberg road yesterday afternoon.
According to Commissioner Ismael Basson, regional commander in the Khomas region, members of the Namibian defence force were looking for wood and came across the explosive devices. They immediately informed the police.
“Upon our arrival we counted 22 rifle grenades. It was too dangerous to remove and we decided to detonate them at the scene. We called in the fire department to assist should the veld catch fire,” he said.
After the first 22 exploded, the police came across another 33 exposed by the first explosion. The police also detonated these devices.
“We suspect that someone threw the grenades on the side of the road. This is very dangerous because the devices can explode if they get hot like in a wildfire or are handled by ignorant people. “I appeal to all who have illegal weapons or explosive devices in their possession to hand them in at their nearest police station.
“We currently have another amnesty period for handing it in. If you are caught with the weapons or explosive devices in your possession after the amnesty has expired, you will be arrested and have to explain in court why you have them,” Basson said.
