Excitement and celebration filled the air on Friday as the highly anticipated Goreangab Mall officially opened its doors, marking a major milestone for the Katutura community and Namibia’s retail sector.

The N$270 million development, a partnership between Oryx Properties Limited and Safland Property Group, is expected to reshape shopping and business activities in one of Windhoek’s busiest residential areas.

Strategically located in Goreangab, the modern shopping centre aims to provide residents with easier access to quality retail services without the need to travel long distances into the city centre. For many residents who visited the mall on opening day, the development represents more than just a shopping destination, it symbolises convenience, opportunity and growth for the community. Several shoppers expressed their appreciation for having major retail outlets brought closer to where they live. Residents said the mall would save them transport costs and travelling time, especially for families who previously had to spend extra money commuting to other shopping centres in Windhoek.

“It is a very good idea to bring a mall closer to us,” one shopper said. “We no longer need to travel far for basic shopping. Everything we need is now here in our community.” Another resident described the opening of the mall as a “dream come true” for the people of Katutura and Goreangab, adding that the development would also create opportunities for local businesses and job seekers.

The mall, which covers approximately 14,700 square metres of retail space, features more than 40 tenants, including major brands such as Shoprite, Ackermans, Clicks, Foschini, Markhams, OK Furniture, Bargain Build, Jet, Cash Crusaders and American Swiss. In addition to the retail area, the development also includes around 10,000 square metres of basement parking as well as a dedicated public transport hub designed to improve accessibility for commuters. The integrated transport terminal allows taxis to access a lower-level station, making movement between transport and shopping facilities more convenient for residents. The project has also made a significant contribution to employment creation. Approximately 700 jobs were created through the development, with 340 positions generated during construction and a further 360 permanent jobs now available through the mall’s operations.

Despite challenges caused by heavy rainfall during the construction period, main contractor Andeo Construction completed the project within just 15 months after taking over the site in February 2025.

Sustainability also forms part of the mall’s vision. Goreangab Mall is EDGE green-certified, reflecting environmentally conscious building standards aimed at reducing energy and water consumption. The opening of the mall also saw Bank Windhoek officially launch its first digital hub branch at the new facility. Head of Strategic Communications and Social Impact at Bank Windhoek, Bronwyn Moody, said the initiative forms part of the bank’s commitment to bringing financial services closer to the community.

Moody explained that the digital hub was designed to offer customers a modern and convenient banking experience while improving accessibility for residents in the area. Goreangab Mall forms part of the broader Goreangab Waterfront Development, which is expected to include approximately 2,500 residential units, further positioning the area as one of Windhoek’s growing urban hubs.

The mall will operate from Monday to Saturday between 09:00 and 18:00, while Sunday and public holiday trading hours will run from 09:00 to 14:00.
