Groot Aub residents assured free municipal services will continue
Residents of Groot Aub were assured that municipal services currently provided by the City of Windhoek remain free of charge, as government and the City reaffirmed their commitment to the area's continued development during a consultative meeting held on Tuesday, 4 August 2026.
The meeting, attended by the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sankwasa James Sankwasa, the City of Windhoek, the Khomas Regional Council and members of the Groot Aub community, focused on key development priorities, including land ownership, municipal services, housing, infrastructure and future spatial development. Addressing residents, the City's Strategic Executive for Property Management and Human Settlements, Faniel Maanda, confirmed that the City continues to provide water, sewerage and solid waste services at no cost to residents, while investing in critical infrastructure such as the ongoing Phase 2 Groot Aub Water Pipeline Upgrade. The pipeline replacement brings the City’s total investment in Groot Aub’s water infrastructure to N$18.4 million, including N$11 million spent on pipeline materials alone.
Sankwasa reminded residents that development takes time, saying, "Rome wasn't built in one day." He also warned against the illegal sale of land, stressing that land allocation is regulated by law and urging residents to obtain lease agreements as the legal basis for occupying and developing their properties.
With an estimated population of 20,000, Groot Aub continues to benefit from coordinated efforts between the City of Windhoek, Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, and the Khomas Regional Council to improve service delivery and create sustainable development opportunities for the community.
