Hardap governor delivers hope and relief to families
The Office of the Hardap Governor has intensified its community outreach efforts, delivering both practical support and heartfelt compassion to vulnerable families across the region. Through engagements with local communities, the Office identified the plight of Johanna, who has been caring for her late sister’s disabled child under extremely difficult conditions. The family had been living in a poorly constructed corrugated iron (zinc) structure, which made it particularly challenging to endure the rainy season.
While acknowledging the broader need for durable brick housing across Namibia, Hardap Governor, Riaan McNab, intervened through the Cash for Work programme to improve the family’s living conditions. A safer and more secure corrugated iron structure was constructed, ensuring better protection against harsh weather. The initiative also prioritised local economic empowerment by engaging skilled workers from the community to carry out the construction. McNab extended his gratitude to Prime Minister and staff in the Office of the Prime Minister for their collective efforts in bringing meaningful relief to the family. He emphasised the importance of unity and compassion in driving development, noting that tangible change is achieved through action and care for one another.
In a separate act of solidarity, the Governor and his staff visited a grieving family following the tragic death of 13-year-old Kondjeni, who lost his life due to an electric shock. The young boy, described as a promising learner and captain of his school’s hockey team, had his life cut short in the unfortunate incident. The delegation offered condolences to his mother, Emmerencia, and her family, sharing in their grief and offering support during the difficult time. Messages of comfort and prayers for strength were extended, with the Governor expressing hope that the family would find courage and healing in the days ahead.
Meanwhile, in Gibeon, two elderly residents received newly constructed corrugated iron dwellings under the same Cash for Work programme, each built at a cost of N$12,500. For the beneficiaries, the houses represent more than shelter they offer dignity, safety and renewed hope as the colder winter months approach. Working in collaboration with the Gibeon Village Council, the homes were also electrified, ensuring functional and comfortable living spaces. Food parcels were additionally provided by both the Governor’s Office and the Village Council to support the recipients during their transition. The beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation, noting that the assistance would significantly improve their quality of life. This initiative underscores the continued commitment of the Office of the Governor, in partnership with local authorities, to uplift vulnerable members of the community, particularly senior citizens.
The outreach programme is ongoing, with Governor McNab expected to hand over a third house to another elderly resident in Takarania, near Mariental, in the coming days.
