Havana’s health crisis
Residents of Havana Extensions 8, 9, 10 and 11 face serious challenges accessing healthcare. The matter was raised by Festus Thomas Body of Christ Party (BCP), who gave notice that he would ask the Minister of Health and Social Services about the healthcare situation in the four extensions on 7 October 2026.
The extensions are about five kilometres from a small clinic in Havana. However, residents seeking treatment must climb what was described as large mountains and cross rivers to reach the facility. "The situation becomes particularly difficult at night when residents fall ill, as some are forced to rely on private vehicles to reach the clinic, often at a high cost" he said.
Thomas seek to establish whether the minister is aware of the difficulties residents are experiencing and why an additional clinic or nurse has not been deployed to the area as an urgent intervention. He further stated that he would want to know when the Ministry last sent an ambulance to the extensions to transport sick residents to the clinic. Thomas said that his focus will also be on the government's plans to ensure that healthcare services reach residents of tensions 8 to 11 and whether the Ministry has an immediate plan to acquire land and construct a proper clinic or health centre in the area to better meet the healthcare needs of residents.
The questions put the accessibility of healthcare in the four Havana extensions directly before Parliament, with attention on immediate transport assistance, additional health personnel and the longer-term provision of a dedicated health facility.
