Katutura residents question power cuts over water arrears
The residents of Katutura Central have questioned the City of Windhoek’s practice of disconnecting household electricity when water accounts are in arrears. The concern was raised during a public meeting between residents and the City of Windhoek at the corner of Shanghai Street and Independence Avenue on Sunday.
Residents sought clarity on why electricity supplies could be disconnected over outstanding water payments, arguing that the two services are billed under separate accounts. The issue formed part of several concerns raised by community members during the engagement, which provided an opportunity for residents to discuss service delivery matters with city officials and councillors. Solar energy was also highlighted during the meeting, with residents encouraged to consider solar solutions for their homes. This comes after information shared at the meeting showed that only 822 of approximately 70,000 households in Windhoek currently use solar energy, accounting for about 1% of the city’s households.
Residents interested in learning more about solar energy can visit the Solar Centre at 1800 Erickson Street or contact the centre on 061 290 2509. The discussion focused on service delivery concerns and ways residents can access alternative energy solutions.
