The City of Windhoek welcomed His Worship Christian Specht, Mayor of Mannheim, Germany, for discussions on strengthening the long-standing sister-city relationship between Mannheim and Windhoek.

At the top of the discussions was affordable housing, with the Mayor of Windhoek Sakarias Uunona, highlighting the City’s ongoing efforts to formalise informal settlements and the relocation of residents as part of finding lasting solutions to housing challenges in Windhoek.

The two cities also explored potential collaboration in renewable energy, housing, arts, tourism, culture and recreational facilities. Specht noted that Windhoek can learn a great deal from Mannheim’s approach to addressing housing challenges, while emphasising that cultural aspects are equally important, particularly for the younger generation.

“Cultural elements are very important,” Specht said, expressing his anticipation for the upcoming photographic exhibition showcasing the strong cultural connection between the two cities.

The exhibition will take place on 19 August 2026 at 15:00 at the City of Windhoek Function Hall, featuring a guided tour and panel discussion with participating photographers.
