Mayor returns to address Epandulo concerns
Windhoek Mayor Sakaria Uunona has returned to the Epandulo Informal Settlement in the Moses //Garoëb Constituency to assess progress on concerns raised by residents over uncollected waste, illegal dumping and obstructed stormwater drainage systems.
Uunona initially visited the settlement on 2 July 2026 after seeing social media reports highlighting the challenges faced by residents. During his latest visit, the Mayor met with community leaders to discuss possible solutions to the waste management challenges. Residents had requested two skip containers to improve waste collection in the settlement.
However, the City of Windhoek said the layout of the shacks makes it difficult for refuse collection trucks to enter the area to deliver or collect skip containers. As an alternative, it was agreed that refuse bags will be distributed to households, with waste collected twice a week to ensure regular removal. The City has also deployed smaller excavators to clean riverbeds and improve the flow of stormwater, addressing concerns about obstructed drainage systems.
The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to address infrastructure and service delivery concerns raised by residents. Meanwhile, the City of Windhoek said it remains committed to improving and maintaining its road infrastructure to ensure safer and more efficient travel for all road users. Pothole repair works are currently under way in various parts of the city. The ongoing maintenance forms part of the City's broader road rehabilitation programme, which aims to improve road safety and driving conditions while preserving the longevity of the city's road network.
