Namibian police are investigating a dramatic escape from lawful custody at the Onandjaba Police Station after awaiting-trial inmates allegedly overpowered officers, seized a firearm, and accessed the station’s strong room during a violent incident on Sunday evening.

The incident, which formed part of the Namibian Police’s weekend serious incidents report covering 22 to 25 May, was among a series of murders, armed robberies, fatal crashes, rape cases, and unexplained deaths recorded across the country.

According to police, the Onandjaba incident occurred at around 17:00 while officers were distributing meals and medication to inmates. The suspects allegedly overpowered officers, assaulted a female police officer, and held her at gunpoint while demanding vehicle keys. Police said the inmates then used the stolen keys to gain access to the station’s strong room before escaping.

No arrests had been made by Monday afternoon, while investigations continued into the robbery, housebreaking, theft, and escape from lawful custody case.

Women tied up during Eros house robbery

In one of the most brazen robberies reported over the weekend, six armed suspects allegedly broke into a house in Akwamarien Street in Eros, Klein Windhoek, and tied up two women before fleeing with valuables.

The incident allegedly occurred between 08:00 and 09:00 on Friday. Police said the suspects forced entry through the kitchen door while one of the female victims was charging her cellphone.

The group allegedly tied the woman up with a rope in the dining room and demanded money and keys to a safe. When a second woman arrived at the house, she was allegedly grabbed, stripped of her clothing, and tied up using shoelaces.

The suspects reportedly escaped with a laptop, personal belongings, and a gate remote. Police said one suspect had been unmasked during the robbery and could potentially be identified, but no arrests or recoveries had yet been made.

Murders, shootings, and stabbings

In Havana, Wanaheda, a 40-year-old Angolan national, was allegedly stabbed to death during a fight on Friday night. Police said a 42-year-old Namibian man allegedly stabbed the victim in the chest, killing him instantly. The suspect allegedly also stabbed the deceased’s girlfriend during the altercation. She survived and was reported to be in stable condition.

The suspect was arrested and remains in police custody. In Tutaleni, Walvis Bay, police are investigating a robbery and murder case after a suspected robbery attempt turned deadly in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Fatal crashes claim multiple lives

Several deadly road accidents were also recorded over the weekend. In Mpungu Constituency, two people died after a vehicle travelling from Rundu to Mpungu allegedly overturned on the B10 road near Lihaha village on Friday morning.

Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle, killing both the driver and the passenger instantly. Another fatal collision occurred on the B1 road between Oniipa and Omuthiya on Friday night. According to police, a Toyota Corolla allegedly struck a Volkswagen Polo from behind, causing the Polo to collide with an oncoming Toyota pick-up.

The 32-year-old driver of the Polo and a 39-year-old passenger died at the scene. Four other people sustained moderate injuries.

Other serious incidents

In Tsumkwe, a 32-year-old man was arrested after allegedly dragging a woman into an unfinished shack and raping her on Friday afternoon. Police alleged the suspect grabbed the victim while she was walking before assaulting and raping her without consent.
