Rapid urbanisation strains Windhoek services

The City of Windhoek says rapid urbanisation continues to put pressure on its ability to provide adequate housing, serviced land, water and sanitation to residents. The city acknowledged the challenges during a council meeting late last week, noting that the growing demand for basic services remains a significant concern.

Despite limited resources, the council said it remains committed to accelerating the servicing of land and extending access to water and electricity in informal settlements. The city said its goal is to ensure that all residents, regardless of where they live, have access to basic services and opportunities that contribute to a dignified quality of life.

Council further called on residents and other stakeholders to support its initiatives, stressing that cooperation is necessary to improve living conditions across the city.

However, the city's acknowledgement of the pressure caused by rapid urbanisation highlights the continued challenge of ensuring that housing and basic services keep pace with the growing demand.
