Rehoboth cemeteries reach full capacity
Rehoboth Town Council has announced plans to close its two existing cemeteries to new burials, citing a lack of available space and damage to cemetery fencing. During a council meeting, the council said both cemeteries, located opposite Rehoboth High School, had reached full capacity, prompting the need to direct residents to the newly designated cemetery.
The council indicated that burials have already started at the new cemetery and urged residents to make use of the site set aside for future burials. However, residents who had previously purchased graves in the two existing cemeteries will be treated differently from those who have not secured burial plots. The council said it would issue an official public notice outlining the arrangements for the closure of the two cemeteries, particularly for residents who had not purchased graves beforehand.
The decision comes amid concerns over the continued damage to cemetery fencing, which the council said had been damaged beyond repair as a result of the pressure on the existing burial sites. The council appealed to residents to observe the new arrangements as it moves to address the shortage of burial space in the town.
