Water quality in Rehoboth has improved following the recent manganese-related discolouration, said NamWater Chief Operations Officer Andries Kok during a water discoloration update session.

He further stated that NamWater has increased monitoring, adjusted chemical dosing, cleaned reservoirs and plans to flush affected sections of the network.

He further stated that recent test results showed that the water quality had improved, although manganese could still be present in parts of the distribution network. Filter sand will also be replaced as part of medium-term measures. In the longer term, the purification plant is due for an upgrade to strengthen its treatment processes and improve its ability to deal with changing raw-water conditions.

Kok said weekly water-quality testing between March and September produced 40 samples, of which 34 were classified as ideal and six as acceptable. Based on these results, the company said the water was safe to drink, although the brownish discolouration remained an aesthetic concern.

The mayor of Rehoboth is Jacky ⱡKhariseb said that the provision of quality water is a joint responsibility between the local authority and NamWater, while the treatment of water falls exclusively under NamWater's mandate.
