The City of Windhoek has called on families who lost children under the age of 21 during 2024 and 2025 to submit their names for inclusion on the Children’s Memorial Wall. The wall will be unveiled during the annual Candle Lighting Ceremony in December. Families who missed previous submission opportunities are also encouraged to participate.
The Candle Lighting Ceremony is a global event held every year on the second Sunday of December, dedicated to honouring the lives of children who passed away before the age of 21. During the ceremony, memorial plaques bearing the submitted names are unveiled.
The City covers the cost of producing the plaques, and participation is open to all Namibians, not only Windhoek residents.
Names should be submitted in the following format: Full name and surname, date of birth, and date of death, and emailed to [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is 14 November 2025.
The Candle Lighting Ceremony will take place on 14 December 2025, from 18:00 to 19:30, at the Children’s Memorial at Gammams Cemetery in Pionierspark. Families are requested to bring their own candles. Parents who submitted names in 2024 do not need to resubmit, as the names are already recorded for inclusion in this year’s ceremony.
