Restoring dignity for Namibians with Albinism

More than a hat

True progress as a society comes from ensuring that every individual is seen, heard, supported, and empowered to participate fully in life. Every day, Namibians living with albinism face challenges in carrying out outdoor activities, often at risk of developing skin cancer. To help them navigate these harsh conditions, they require essential protection to pursue their dreams and go about their daily lives with dignity and confidence.

It is for this reason that SanlamAllianz donated 3,900 protective waterproof sun hats to the Namibia Albino Association at a handover ceremony held earlier this morning at the SanlamAllianz Centre in Windhoek. The hats will be distributed nationwide to ensure meaningful protection for individuals living with albinism.

Victoria Kambala, Marketing and Communications Consultant at SanlamAllianz, stated that “supporting the albino community reflects SanlamAllianz’s commitment to contributing to the national ethos of the Namibian House, that no Namibian child is left behind.” She added that “SanlamAllianz’s initiatives in health and welfare will always be rooted in ensuring that every child and adult is protected, supported, and empowered to live financially confident, secure and prosperous lives.” Receiving the donation, Joseph Ndinomupya, President of the Namibia Albino Association, thanked SanlamAllianz for the gesture and emphasised that “for persons with albinism, a hat is not an accessory, it is a critical shield. These hats represent a frontline defence against skin

cancer and sun damage, allowing our children and adults to walk, play, and work outdoors with dignity and safety.” He added that “SanlamAllianz is helping to protect the lives of our people, truly a beacon of hope.”

Namibia’s 2024 census has found that the country has approximately 38,000 people living with albinism. This reminds us that inclusion is essential. It calls on all of us to actively promote social equality and equity, and to work together to bring positive change in the lives of all Namibians.

This donation meets real, everyday needs, allowing for safer opportunities to live confidently and independently. It enables individuals with albinism to participate fully in community life and reinforces their rightful place in society.
