Retiree embarks on 1500 km charity walk from Windhoek to Somerset West

A 63-year-old Namibian retiree sets out on a cross-border journey to raise funds and inspire unity

A spirit of determination and goodwill marked a special send-off ceremony in Windhoek on Saturday morning, as 63-year-old retiree Francois Janse van Rensburg set out on an extraordinary 1500-kilometre charity walk to Somerset West in South Africa. The event was officiated by Council Member Austin Kwenani, Chairperson of the Management Committee, who praised Janse van Rensburg’s courage and commitment to making a difference through his journey. The walk, undertaken in support of a charitable cause, is expected to span several weeks as he travels on foot across borders.


As part of the occasion, Kwenani also presented a Message of Goodwill addressed to the Mayor of Cape Town on behalf of Windhoek Mayor Sakarias Uunona. The gesture symbolises unity, cooperation and shared humanity between the two cities, underscoring the broader significance of Janse van Rensburg’s mission.

Speaking at the send-off, Kwenani highlighted the importance of community-driven initiatives and commended the retiree for using his personal journey to raise awareness and support for those in need.

Janse van Rensburg’s ambitious trek will see him cover vast distances under varying conditions, demonstrating both physical endurance and a deep sense of purpose. Supporters who gathered at the departure point expressed admiration for his resolve and wished him well on the demanding journey ahead.
