Santam pledges N$150 000 flood warning signs
Santam Namibia has committed N$150 000 towards a new flood signage initiative launched in partnership with the City of Windhoek, aimed at improving public safety at flood-prone crossings throughout the capital. The initiative comes just months after deadly flash floods struck the capital in March this year, claiming two lives. During the heavy thunderstorms, parts of Hochland Park and the Goreangab Dam area were severely affected.
Against this backdrop, Santam’s intervention seeks to prevent similar tragedies.
“Shifting climate patterns and rapid urbanisation have significantly increased the frequency and intensity of flash floods,” said Franco Feris, Chief Executive Officer of Santam Namibia. “The result has been a concerning rise in vehicles and pedestrians being washed away in dry riverbeds during sudden downpours, in some cases leading to loss of life.”
Santam has funded the installation of critical warning and depth marker signage across several high-risk areas identified by the City’s Emergency and Disaster Risk Management Division.
