Sports facilities set for September construction
Construction of basic sports facilities in Rehoboth and Aranos is expected to begin on 1 September 2026, following an urgent stakeholder meeting convened by Hardap Governor Riaan Charles McNab. The meeting, held in Rehoboth, brought together representatives of the Roads Contractor Company (RCC), consultants and contractors to address outstanding issues and pave the way for construction to begin.
McNab said previous delays had been addressed and urged stakeholders to adhere to clear timelines. He also stressed the importance of maintaining public trust, particularly among young people and the wider sporting community, who have been waiting for the facilities. An on-site inspection was conducted following the meeting, with stakeholders assuring the governor that the remaining technical matters would be resolved during August to allow construction to start on schedule in both towns.
Local employment was also a key issue discussed during the engagement. The Rehoboth and Aranos town councils are expected to begin the process of engaging local communities and inviting unemployed residents and young people to apply for available opportunities. The respective contractors will then work through the councils to recruit local workers. The councils are expected to announce employment opportunities soon. The meeting concluded with stakeholders committing to the implementation of the sports facilities without further delays.
McNab expressed appreciation for the initiative by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to prioritise youth empowerment and sport in Namibia. He emphasised the need for quality, transparency, accountability and commitment throughout the construction process.
The projects are expected to be completed within six months.
