Stop n Shop traders join Mayor’s drive for a cleaner Windhoek
Windhoek Mayor, Sakaria Uunona, joined traders at Stop n Shop on Saturday for the eighth edition of the Mayoral Clean-Up Campaign, reinforcing the City’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner and healthier trading environment. Before the start of the business day, traders, local authority councillors, City of Windhoek officials, and Tobias Hainyeko Constituency Councillor, Christopher Likuwa, rolled up their sleeves and took part in a large-scale clean-up of the open market.
Armed with brooms, refuse bags and a shared sense of civic responsibility, participants worked together to remove litter and improve the market’s surroundings. The clean-up effort also attracted volunteers from Rent-A-Drum, Namica Supermarket and students from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), who answered the Mayor’s call to help restore Windhoek’s reputation as Africa’s cleanest city.
Addressing participants, Uunona emphasised that the campaign is not a once-off initiative, but part of a sustained effort to promote a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility among residents. The campaign is scheduled to continue until October 2026. “The activity at Stop n Shop forms part of the City’s commitment to bringing the campaign directly to communities, ensuring that every constituency becomes an active participant in building a cleaner and more sustainable Windhoek,” he said.
The Mayor commended traders for their enthusiastic participation, highlighting the importance of maintaining hygienic trading spaces. He noted that unclean environments can pose serious public health risks, including food contamination and the spread of preventable illnesses. To support the community-led initiative, the City of Windhoek will keep its cleaning machinery in the constituency over the coming days to clear riverbeds and other areas that cannot be effectively cleaned by hand.
The Mayoral Clean-Up Campaign continues to gain momentum across the capital, bringing together residents, businesses, community leaders and institutions in a collective effort to create a cleaner, safer and more sustainable city for all.
