TEDx UNAM to celebrate Namibia’s unsung heroes
TEDx University of Namibia (UNAM) will host an event on 31 October 2026 under the theme ‘The Rise of Local Heroes’, celebrating ordinary Namibians whose resilience, determination and contributions have made a meaningful difference in their communities and the nation. The event aims to bring attention to individuals who have overcome adversity, challenged the odds and used their experiences to create opportunities, inspire change and positively influence the lives of others.
Through a series of talks and personal stories, the event will highlight journeys that demonstrate courage, innovation, perseverance and the power of the human spirit. The initiative seeks to challenge the perception that heroism is defined by fame, wealth or public recognition, emphasising instead that it can be found in ordinary people who rise above difficult circumstances and dedicate themselves to making a difference.
By providing a platform for these often-unheard stories, TEDx UNAM hopes to inspire a new generation of Namibians to recognise their own potential and the opportunities within their communities. Event organiser Natangwe Shipwilikineni said Namibia had no shortage of heroes, but many of their stories remained untold. “Through TEDx University of Namibia, we hope to provide a platform for these stories to be heard, celebrating individuals whose resilience, determination and contributions have made a meaningful difference in their communities and our nation,” Shipwilikineni said.
“Our aim is to inspire others by showing them what is possible when ordinary people dare to do extraordinary things.”
The event seeks to recognise the individuals shaping Namibia’s story and remind the nation that some of its greatest heroes are found within its own communities.
