Uunona calls for cleaner city

Keeping Windhoek clean must become a shared responsibility between the municipality and its residents, Mayor Sakarias Uunona said during a community clean-up campaign in Samora Machel Constituency on Saturday.

The Mayoral Clean-Up Campaign brought residents and community partners together at the Green Mountain Soccer Field as part of the City of Windhoek’s efforts to promote cleaner neighbourhoods and greater environmental responsibility.

Uunona said taking the campaign directly into communities was important in ensuring that residents across all constituencies played an active role in maintaining the capital. This year’s campaign is being held under the theme ‘Go Green, Skip the Plastic’, encouraging residents to reduce their use of single-use plastics and adopt more environmentally friendly practices.

The Mayor urged residents to consider simple changes, such as using reusable shopping bags instead of disposable plastic bags. He warned that plastic waste can contribute to pollution, blocked drainage systems and long-term environmental damage, making waste management an important part of protecting communities.

The campaign also sought to reinforce the idea that maintaining a clean city can not rest solely on the shoulders of municipal workers. Residents, businesses and community organisations all have a role to play in keeping public spaces clean and preventing waste from accumulating in neighbourhoods.

The City extended its appreciation to the Samora Machel community and partners, including FNB Namibia and Namica, for supporting and participating in the campaign. Uunona said the City would continue encouraging communities to embrace sustainable practices and work collectively towards a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Windhoek.

The campaign serves as a reminder that lasting change begins at community level, with everyday choices such as reducing plastic use, disposing of waste responsibly and taking pride in the areas where people live.
