Water meter theft, vandalism threaten Windhoek water services
The City of Windhoek has raised concern over an increase in the theft of water meters and vandalism of standpipe water dispensers across the city. In a public notice, the City said the incidents were criminal offences that disrupt water supply, place a financial burden on the municipality and negatively affect service delivery to communities.
The municipality warned that anyone found stealing water meters, tampering with municipal infrastructure or vandalising standpipe water dispensers could face legal action. Offenders may also be required to pay fines and cover the costs of replacing damaged infrastructure, while repeated or serious offences could result in disconnection of services. The City urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving municipal water infrastructure to its Customer Contact Centre or law enforcement agencies.
