The Mayoral Clean-Up Campaign made its stop in the Windhoek East Constituency on Saturday, where community members and leaders gathered at the Woermann Brock parking area to reaffirm their commitment to a cleaner and greener capital city. The initiative attracted a strong turnout, led by His Worship, Mayor Sakarias Uunona, alongside Windhoek East Constituency Councillor Jochen Rudolf Traut and Councillor Jesaya Ikali. They were joined by employees from the City of Windhoek, officers from the Ministry of Defence, and local residents who volunteered their time to clean the area.

Addressing the volunteers, the leaders emphasised that maintaining the beauty of Windhoek is a shared responsibility. They noted that while the campaign brings communities together for a day of action, cleanliness should be a daily commitment for everyone who calls the city home. The leadership also commended residents of Windhoek East for maintaining clean surroundings, highlighting that many areas within the constituency are already well-kept. According to the officials, if all residents across the capital adopted the same attitude towards cleanliness, Windhoek would be well positioned to reclaim its title as one of Africa’s cleanest cities.

Beyond the clean-up activities, the campaign also focused on environmental sustainability. Residents were encouraged to replace single-use plastic bags with reusable cloth shopping bags as part of efforts to reduce pollution and protect the environment. As community members worked side by side, the message of the day remained clear: a clean and vibrant city reflects the pride of its people. By taking care of streets, open spaces, and public areas, residents are contributing to a healthier, safer, and more attractive city for all.

This year’s Mayoral Clean-Up Campaign continues under the theme, “Go Green, Skip the Plastic”, reinforcing the importance of environmental responsibility and collective action in building a better Windhoek.
