Windhoek electrifies 1,173 homes, but only 66 have power
The City of Windhoek has physically completed 1,173 household electricity connections in informal and peri-urban communities, but only 66 households have so far been switched on, raising questions about when the remaining residents will begin benefiting from the project.
Speaking at the City of Windhoek's Ordinary Council Meeting held in Windhoek yesterday, the Mayor Sakarias Uunona said the electrification programme had progressed since its launch, with construction initially targeting approximately 1,300 households across Tobias Hainyeko, Windhoek Rural, Moses Garoëb and Khomasdal constituencies. Uunona said the municipality had moved beyond installing electricity infrastructure and was now opening individual customer accounts to progressively energise completed household connections.
"To date, 66 houses have been energised, and the remaining households will be energised as individual accounts of customers are opened and finalised," he said. The project follows a groundbreaking ceremony held on 29 April 2026, during which the municipality committed to accelerating electricity access in informal and peri-urban communities. Uunona further stated that the programme formed part of the city's efforts to expand access to safe and reliable electricity and improve the quality of life of residents in underserved communities.
While the physical completion of 1173 connections marks progress in the rollout, the fact that only 66 households have electricity indicates that a significant number of residents are still waiting for their connections to become operational. The municipality has not yet provided a specific timeline for when all the remaining households will get powered or explained how long the customer account-opening process is expected to take.
The completion of the infrastructure and the activation of household connections remain two separate stages of the programme, with the city indicating that the final rollout depends on the opening and finalisation of individual customer accounts.
