Windhoek invites artists to design infrastructure murals

The City of Windhoek has invited prospective artists to submit mural design proposals for electrical infrastructure installations across the capital as part of its Windhoek Electrical Infrastructure Mural Project. The initiative aims to transform electrical distribution stations and minsub boxes into visually appealing public spaces through artistic designs that complement their surroundings.

According to a notice, artists can select from 36 identified sites across various Windhoek suburbs, including electrical distribution stations and minsubs, which are metal electrical boxes used to house electrical equipment.

Interested artists are encouraged to visit their chosen sites to assess the structures and their surroundings before developing their proposals. Alternatively, they can use Google Maps to familiarise themselves with the locations.

The city has advised artists to consider the dimensions, surroundings and structural features of their selected sites when preparing their designs to ensure that the proposed artwork is suitable for the infrastructure.

The identified locations span several suburbs, providing artists with a range of sites to choose from when developing concepts that could enhance the appearance of public infrastructure. The project offers artists an opportunity to contribute to the visual character of the capital by introducing creative artwork to everyday urban structures. The city has published a list of the 36 sites, including their facility names, suburbs, street names and GPS coordinates, to help artists identify and locate their preferred installations.
