The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) recently concluded a two-day "Women in Leadership" workshop in Windhoek. The event brought together nearly 60 representatives from the MUN Women’s Desk across four regions to discuss critical issues, strengthen female participation, and advance leadership within the union.

The workshop served as a platform to review constitutional amendments, discuss the IndustriALL Women Committee report, and develop a strategic plan for the MUN Women’s Desk.

Regina Nambahu, chairperson of the MUN Women’s Desk, opened the proceedings by acknowledging the evolving landscape for women in the industry.

"We need to reflect on current developments, share experiences, and collectively plan for stronger representation and meaningful participation of women within the structure of the union," she said. She further remarked, “The mining and energy industry has historically been male-dominated. Yet, through resilience, determination, and solidarity, women have continued to break barriers and claim their rightful space. We are no longer just participants; we are leaders, decision-makers, and agents of change.”

The keynote address was delivered by lawmaker Justina Jonas, who addressed both the challenges and the path forward. She acknowledged that the sector "has historically been, and remains, male-dominated," noting that recognising this reality is the foundation for meaningful transformation.

Jonas encouraged women to overcome their fears and step into leadership roles, stating, “Women are capable of occupying the highest offices. What is required of us is confidence, courage, and a conscious decision to step forward. The time for hesitation has passed; we must speak with confidence and claim the spaces that belong to us.”

Hileni Malakia, the secretary of the MUN Women’s Desk, underscored the importance of the gathering.

"This year's theme is 'Rights, Justice, and Action for all women and girls,' and we remain committed to it. We brought these women together to address issues affecting them, particularly in leadership, where there is still reluctance to occupy space. We have delegates from the Southern, Central, Western, and Northern regions. We thank the MUN leadership for making this event possible; soon, you will see the legalised Women’s Desk of the Mineworkers Union of Namibia truly taking its place."

Through this initiative, the MUN remains committed to reflecting the needs of its members and ensuring the internal structures are in place to empower women across the mining and energy sectors.
