MTC and Rössing connect the mine
MTC Namibia and Rössing Uranium Limited have officially inaugurated a private Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network at the Rössing mine, in what both companies describe as a significant step in the digital transformation of Namibia's mining sector.
The deployment covers four dedicated LTE sites, expanding network coverage and delivering enhanced voice and high-speed data connectivity across key operational zones. The infrastructure is designed to support real-time communication in an environment where reliable connectivity is critical to both safety and productivity.
MTC MD Licky Erastus said the network would fundamentally change how teams work on the ground.
"This project is about improving how people connect and work on the ground. It is an enabler of safer, smarter, and more efficient mining operations," he said. "By bringing reliable, high-performance communication into complex industrial environments, we are empowering teams with the tools they need to make better decisions in real time."
Erastus said the project also demonstrated MTC's broader enterprise strategy. In recent years, the company has repositioned its business model through a dedicated Enterprise Business Unit, focused on delivering customised connectivity solutions for private sector partners.
Rössing Uranium MD Johan Coetzee said modern mining was as dependent on data as it was on machinery.
"Every truck we dispatch, every drill reading we analyse, every safety alert we depend on, these all rely on strong, uninterrupted communication," he said. "Without reliable connectivity, we are operating without full visibility."
Coetzee said the four newly installed and upgraded towers would form a critical part of the mine's operational backbone. For Rössing, the private LTE network forms part of its ongoing efforts to modernise infrastructure, improve productivity, and align with evolving global mining standards. For MTC, the project reinforces its role as a strategic enabler of digital transformation across Namibia's key economic sectors.
