NAMDIA backs diamond branding
Namibia should do more to market its diamonds as a distinct national brand as changing consumer preferences and competition from lab-grown stones reshape the global diamond industry, according to the Namibia Diamond Trading Company (NAMDIA).
NAMDIA said diamond buyers were increasingly interested in a stone's origin, ethical credentials and social impact, rather than focusing only on traditional measures such as carat, colour, clarity and cut.
The company said this presented an opportunity for Namibia to build a stronger international identity around its natural diamonds.
Namibia is recognised for producing high-quality diamonds, while its diamond industry is associated with responsible resource management and economic development. NAMDIA said consumers should increasingly understand not only the companies operating in Namibia, but the value and significance of a "Namibian diamond".
According to NAMDIA, stronger collaboration between producers, manufacturers, marketers, retailers and industry bodies could help promote a unified national story.
It also highlighted traceability technology, digital certification, social media and personalised marketing as increasingly important tools for reaching consumers.
NAMDIA said natural diamonds were unlikely to compete with lab-grown diamonds on price, making differentiation through rarity, authenticity, provenance and impact increasingly important.
According to NAMDIA, the future of diamond sales would depend not only on technology and production, but on the industry's ability to build trust and demonstrate the wider value of natural diamonds.
