Welwitschia: Serving up excellence
Robson Hainana, client liaison officer at Welwitschia Services Group, attended the Chamber of Mines of Namibia Expo and Conference at the Windhoek Showgrounds to promote the company’s range of catering, cleaning and labour support services offered to the mining industry and other sectors.
One of Welwitschia’s key specialities is camp management, helping to coordinate the essential field operations that mining activities depend on.
“We are here to maximise this platform, liaise with clients and other stakeholders, and fully understand the scope of mining in Namibia,” Hainana said at the company’s popular stand in the Makalani Hall.
He said the expo also provided an opportunity to strengthen brand awareness, given that some remain unfamiliar with Welwitschia despite its more than 30 years of operations in Namibia and over two decades of supporting the mining sector.
The company provides services to several major mining operations, including B2Gold’s Otjikoto gold mine, Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation, Swakop Uranium, Rössing Uranium and Osino Resources’s Twin Hills gold project.
“Previously, we also worked with Skorpion Zinc before it closed down,” he added.
Over the past five years, the company has expanded its catering and cleaning operations and now employs more than 600 unionised workers.
“We have retained the same clients and added more, which speaks to our experience, know-how and track record in retaining contracts. Ours is a contract-based business, and the business has evolved — and we have evolved with it,” Hainana said.
He said Welwitschia is a 100% Namibian-owned company with a small number of shareholders who support above-average remuneration, career growth opportunities and staff development through knowledge enhancement initiatives and short courses.
“Some employees who joined at entry level are now in management positions,” he said.
Looking ahead, Hainana said Welwitschia remains optimistic about its prospects for the remainder of the year and intends to maintain its market position while pursuing further growth.
“We want to be part of the role-players from the onset,” he said, referring to the growing momentum in Namibia’s mining sector and the wider economy.
