When day turns into night
There are moments when even people who rarely look up at the sky find themselves gazing upwards in fascination. A total solar eclipse is one of them.
When the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, the solar disc disappears behind the Moon for a few minutes. The sky darkens, temperatures can drop, stars and planets become visible – and along the edge of the black lunar disc, the Sun’s glowing corona appears.
It is hardly surprising that this spectacle has fascinated people for thousands of years. To early cultures, it must have seemed like an intervention in the natural order of the world. Solar eclipses were interpreted as divine signs, warnings or bad omens. Even today, little has changed about the fascination – only our explanation is different.
Fascination leads to prosperity
Just how strongly this fascination can move people was demonstrated by the total solar eclipse of 21 June 2001. It crossed southern Africa. According to estimates at the time, around 20 000 eclipse watchers travelled to Zambia alone, while hotels along the path of totality were fully booked. The Zambian government declared the day a public holiday and expected revenues of around US$15 million.
More than two decades later, the solar eclipse of 8 April 2024 in North America provided an impressive example of what can result from such an event. In the US state of Vermont, around 175 000 additional visitors came from outside the state. They spent US$34.8 million directly, while the total economic impact was estimated at US$54 million. Remarkably, the eclipse took place during what is normally a relatively weak tourism season.
And now it is Namibia’s turn.
On 25 November 2030, a total solar eclipse will cross southern Africa and continue towards Australia. The path of totality is approximately 169 kilometres wide. In Namibia, the partial eclipse begins at 06:19 CAT; totality reaches the country at 07:16 and ends a few minutes later.
Windhoek itself lies within the path of totality. There, totality begins at around 07:19 and lasts just under two minutes. Maximum eclipse will occur at around 07:20, while the Sun will only be fully visible again at around 08:21. Astro Trails specifically identifies Windhoek as an attractive observation location and sees combining the eclipse with Namibia’s landscapes and safari offerings as part of possible travel itineraries.
This is not simply an astronomical event. It is a tourism opportunity with a clearly defined expiry date.
Natural wonder offers an opportunity
Namibia does not have to invent a new tourism product for this. The country already possesses exactly what eclipse tourists are looking for: low light pollution, spectacular landscapes, lodges, deserts, wildlife and vast open spaces.
The solar eclipse could be combined with uniquely Namibian natural attractions such as the Etosha Pan, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund at the coast, the vast landscapes of the south and the protected areas in central and northern Namibia. It could be promoted and staged on a much larger scale, turning a two-minute spectacle in the sky into a stay lasting several days or even several weeks.
However, preparation must begin now. Flight capacity, accommodation, campsites, transport routes, medical services, communications, security measures and suitable observation sites need to be planned. Equally important are certified solar filters, professional astronomy offerings, trained guides and an international marketing campaign. The experience from 2001 also shows that protective glasses and public awareness are not merely secondary considerations.
Act now!
2030 is also the target year of the new National Development Plan. By then, Namibia aims to attract 1.8 million tourists, increase tourism’s contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 5% and create 80 000 jobs in the sector. The solar eclipse therefore falls precisely within the period in which Namibia intends to significantly expand its tourism industry.
The question is therefore not whether Namibia can benefit from the eclipse. The examples of Zambia and Vermont show that this is possible. The real question is: Will Namibia be ready in 2030 when the Moon darkens the Sun?
Because the eclipse lasts only minutes. The economic opportunity behind it could last considerably longer – and create prospects for the future.
