National budget prioritises education, youth development
In the recently tabled 2024–25 national budget, the Namibian government has allocated significant funds to the education and youth development ministries.Finance and public enterprise minister Ipumbu Shiimi announced that N$18.4 billion has been allocated to the basic education, arts and culture ministry, with an additional N$4.8 billion allocated to the higher education ministry, marking a 13.0% increase from the previous year.
The budget for the sports, youth, and national service ministry has also seen a substantial increase of 45.3% to N$679.4 million. Minister Shiimi emphasised that these allocations will support skills development and capacity-building programmes for the youth, including funding for various youth programmes and enterprises.
Furthermore, the budget includes a salary increment for University of Namibia (Unam) staff, with N$108.3 million allocated for a 5% increase. Shiimi expressed the government's commitment to enhancing education, supporting youth development and promoting sports activities in the country.
Challenges remain
Shiimi's recent back-to-school tour showcased government efforts to improve education infrastructure in Namibia. The tour included visits to Havana High School, Augustineum Secondary School and Mix Primary School.
At Havana High School, which recently underwent significant development, Shiimi observed the positive impact of government investments. Despite some challenges, such as a damaged roof, the school has made impressive progress, he said.
Augustineum Secondary School, a beneficiary of the Education and Training Quality Improvement Project, demonstrated the positive outcomes of government collaboration with the Africa Development Bank. The school's facilities, including a renovated hostel and dining room, highlighted the potential of well-deployed tax money to support education.
Mix Primary School, a new establishment in Brakwater, showcased ongoing construction efforts to accommodate pre-primary and grade one learners.
The school's enthusiastic reception of Minister Shiimi indicated the eagerness of young learners to engage with education.
These budget allocations and infrastructure developments underscore the government's commitment to enhancing education and youth development in Namibia.
