How young Namibians are shaping the country’s clean energy future
Nuclear energy is emerging as one of the strongest foundations for Namibia’s long-term development. For young people, this sector represents far more than scientific theory. It offers a chance to contribute to national energy security, climate resilience and technological advancement. As the NAMYGN Executive Advisory Board explains, “NAMYGN is not just about nuclear science; it is about empowering young Namibians to become the architects of our nation's sustainable energy future.”At the centre of this effort is the Namibia Young Generation in Nuclear, known as NAMYGN. Through mentorships, technical training and youth-focused conferences, the organisation equips emerging professionals with the skills needed to enter nuclear and STEM careers. These programmes address critical national shortages in radiation protection, nuclear safety and regulatory expertise. According to the Advisory Board, “Every young Namibian with a passion for STEM deserves a pathway to excellence. NAMYGN exists to open doors, connect mentors with mentees, and transform ambition into expertise.”
Secondary school learners are also a priority. NAMYGN visits schools, hosts STEM awareness events and provides hands-on learning activities that demystify nuclear technology. This early exposure helps learners see nuclear science as a practical, accessible field with career opportunities in medicine, agriculture, water management and environmental protection.
University students and graduates receive even deeper support. Through partnerships with ministries, universities, TVET institutions and industry, NAMYGN connects young people to internships, research opportunities and career pathways. As the Advisory Board notes, “Namibia has world-class uranium resources, but without skilled young professionals to harness nuclear technology safely and innovatively, we cannot truly realise our potential as a regional leader.”
Nuclear energy also aligns strongly with Namibia’s sustainability goals. It provides low-carbon, reliable power and supports innovations that improve healthcare and environmental monitoring. The Advisory Board highlights this balance by stating, “NAMYGN's commitment to nuclear technology is inseparable from our commitment to safety. We are building a generation that understands that innovation and responsibility must go hand in hand.”
For Namibia’s youth, the message is clear. Curiosity is enough to begin. The Advisory Board summarises it best: “Supporting NAMYGN means investing in more than young people; it means securing Namibia's strategic competitive advantage for generations to come and leaving a legacy of scientific excellence.”
