PK celebrates culture
Vibrant diversity
Song, dance, dress and food took centre stage at PK de Villiers' Culture Day.
On 20 March, our school hosted an unforgettable Culture Day to celebrate Namibia’s vibrant diversity. The event showcased the rich traditions of four unique cultures - Herero, Wambo, Nama, and Basters - creating a day filled with learning, music, dance, and culinary delights. The day began with a traditional procession, where students proudly wore colourful Herero dresses with their iconic wide skirts and headpieces, along with traditional Nama and Wambo attire, each reflecting the distinct craftsmanship and beauty of their cultures. The Basters also shared their heritage through striking outfits that blended Dutch and African influences, highlighting the historical fusion of cultures.
Throughout the day, each group performed traditional dances and songs, filling the school with rhythm and energy.
The Herero students performed a graceful dance characterised by slow movements and flowing gestures, while the Wambo students showcased their energetic style, known for its lively steps and vibrant costumes. The Nama and Basters’ performances were equally captivating, featuring the unique Nama rhythm and the Basters’ cultural music, which included the distinct sounds of the traditional drum.
In addition to the performances, students had the opportunity to sample a variety of traditional dishes from each culture. From hearty Herero stew to the flavourful Nama potjiekos and delicious Wambo maize porridge, the food stalls were a feast for the senses. The Basters offered a delightful taste of their signature roosterkoek—a traditional bread served with savoury accompaniments.
Culture Day was a great success, promoting unity and pride in our shared heritage. The event not only celebrated the richness of Namibian cultures but also encouraged a deeper appreciation and respect for our diversity.
We look forward to continuing this meaningful tradition in the years to come.
